Tsukisamu Anpan

Anpan is a Japanese bread filled with a traditional sweet red bean paste known as anko. Honma's Tsukisamu Anpan originated in 1874 in Tsukisamu Village. Honma strives to make high quality sweets through careful attention to its ingredients, flavor and traditional chewy mochi-like texture.

[History of Honma Tsukisamu Anpan]

Tsukisamu Anpan dates back to 1874, when Onuma Jinzaburo, who sold sweets to the army, heard rumors of the huge success of Tokyo's Kimuraya Sakura Anpan. He then tried to make his own version of the anpan, creating a mooncake-like manju. One of the people who received instruction on the anpan-making method, Homma Yozaburo (founder), began manufacturing and selling Tsukisamu Anpan in Tsukisamu village. In
1911, when the 25th Army Infantry Regiment and local residents worked together to build a road from Hiragishi to Tsukisamu, Toyohira Town provided the army with five anpan per person each day. The road that was built was affectionately nicknamed the Anpan Road, and a monument was erected in 1987. The high-quality ingredients and meticulous manufacturing methods remain unchanged to this day.
